ABOUT • OVERLAND GEAR GUIDE

Your Adventure. Your Gear. Our Passion.

Welcome to Overland Gear Guide — where the spirit of exploration meets the science of reliability.

Field-tested reviews, training-led guides, and tools designed to keep you moving, not stuck.

We’re not here to sell hype. We’re here to share truth from the trail — real-world reviews, hands-on testing, and expert insights into the gear that powers your adventures.

From recovery kits and tyre systems to fridge-freezers, rooftop tents and long-distance route planning, our goal is simple: help you build a safer, smarter, more capable overland setup without wasting money on the wrong kit.

In short: if it claims to be overland-ready, we want to know whether it actually works when you’re axle-deep in mud, buried in dunes, or miles from the nearest tarmac.

🌍 Our Mission

To empower overlanders, off-roaders, and outdoor enthusiasts with authentic gear knowledge — helping you choose equipment that performs when it matters most.

We believe that preparation is freedom. The right rig, the right skills, and the right gear turn breakdowns into stories and unknown tracks into opportunities.

  • Safety-first, ego-last overlanding.
  • Clear, unbiased gear recommendations.
  • Training-led content, not just “top 10” lists.

⚙️ What We Do

  • Hands-On Gear Reviews — real tests, clear pros and cons, and where each product fits in your system.
  • Tiered Recovery KitsTier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 so you can upgrade logically.
  • Training Hubs & Courses — like Overlanding 101, Recovery 101 and terrain-specific skills hubs.
  • Route & Logistics Tools — including our Overland Expedition Planner.
  • Book & eBook Reviews — so you know which titles are worth adding to your overland library.

🚙 Who We Are

Overland Gear Guide is led by Colin Tandy — an overlander, gear nerd, and educator obsessed with keeping trips safe, simple, and repeatable.

Behind the scenes there’s a growing network of overlanders, mechanics, photographers, and storytellers who contribute feedback, photos, and trail reports from around the world.

Whether it’s a solo shakedown in the Highlands, remote pistes in North Africa, or planning a route from Corby to Cape Town, the focus is always the same: build a system that actually works over time.

  • Base in the UK with a global overlanding outlook.
  • Experience across sand, mud, snow, rock and urban links.
  • Big believers in “learn in low-risk environments first”.

🧪 How We Test Gear

We approach gear like a safety system, not a shopping list. That means:

  • Use-case first: What problem does this solve? Who is it for?
  • Field time over specs: Lab numbers matter, but real-world pulls, deflations, and trip abuse matter more.
  • Layered testing: short shakedowns → weekend trips → multi-week routes.
  • Honest trade-offs: weight, cost, complexity, and failure modes are called out plainly.
