Meet the Front Runner Roof Top Tent: The Ultimate in Low-Profile, Lightweight Adventure
Roof top tents are a game-changer for overlanding, but they often come with compromises: they’re heavy, bulky, and create massive wind drag that kills your fuel economy and howls on the highway.
The Front Runner Roof Top Tent is the solution for the overlander who refuses to compromise on vehicle performance. It is engineered from the ground up to be one of the most aerodynamic, lightweight, and stealthy roof top tents on the market.
The Lowest Profile on the Market
At a truly remarkable 216mm (8.5 inches) high (excluding the ladder), this is the lowest-profile Front Runner Roof Top Tent available. Its sleek, hard-shell design cuts through the wind, dramatically reducing wind noise and, most importantly, minimizing the impact on your fuel consumption. This ultra-low profile also helps keep your vehicle’s center of gravity low, giving you better, safer handling on technical off-road trails and preventing that “top-heavy” feel.
Unbelievably Lightweight
Weighing in at just 43kg (93lbs), this is one of the lightest roof top tents in its class. This incredibly low weight makes a huge difference.
- Easy Installation: It’s easier to install, re-orient, or remove during the off-season.
- Vehicle Performance: It has a minimal impact on your vehicle’s handling.
- Preserved Load Capacity: It leaves you with plenty of your roof rack’s dynamic load capacity for other essential gear like recovery boards, fuel packs, or water.
Spacious and Comfortable
Don’t let the low-profile design fool you. Once unfolded, the tent reveals a surprisingly spacious and comfortable sleeping platform. At 1.3m (4.3′) wide by 2.4m (7.2′) long, it sleeps two adults with ease. The extra length is perfect for taller individuals or for keeping your duffel bags and gear at your feet, out of the way.
Inside, you’ll find a comfortable high-density foam mattress that provides an excellent night’s sleep. The mattress includes a practical, washable polyester oxford fabric cover, making it easy to clean up after a dusty or muddy adventure.
At a Glance: Key Features
- Sleek, Aerodynamic Design: The lowest profile roof top tent on the market at just 216mm (8.5″) high (excluding ladder).
- Featherlight Construction: One of the lightest tents available at only 43kg (93lbs), improving fuel economy and vehicle handling.
- Spacious for Two: Unfolds to a large 1.3m (4.3′) wide x 2.4m (7.2′) long sleeping area.
- Comfort Included: Comes standard with a high-density foam mattress and a removable, washable cover.
- Front Runner Integration: Designed to work seamlessly with Front Runner roof racks.
Please Note: To mount any Front Runner Roof Top Tent to your Front Runner Roof Rack, you will need a Front Runner Tent Mount Kit (sold separately) to ensure a secure, safe, and integrated fit.

Feather-lite and sturdy
Before you buy a RTT, please know what you want before buying something you might regret it later down the road.Super light Roof Top Tent (RTT) and the lightest compared to the rest out there. And that’s THE main reason why I bought this. I’m 5’3” and somewhat strong, not what I was in my 20’s, and want to be able to mount and dismount the tent by myself. Imagine carrying a 115+ lbs RTT in the weirdest angle or position possible? This thing is sub 90 lbs.I live in Southern California and anything 400 miles from here have mild weather throughout the seasons. It doesn’t drop below 0 or higher than 115 degrees. With that said, I’ve been in weather between 40-114 degrees with this tent. The tent holds up very well with the awnings in place, even with moderate winds ~20 MPH. Scary as hell with the winds howling all around you, but it’s sturdy. The fabric is a “special” Oxford tent fabric 400D and can withstand most things. I stormed through wet weather with no issues at all. The insulated aluminum base is solid, but it does get cold in colder nights. It has lots of zip up windows with another layer of mesh windows to allow fresh air to cycle throughout in those hot summers. There’s also a top vent to circulate hot air out too. Not sure if this would hold up in snow.It comes with a 2 inch covered mattress that’s actually comfortable to lay on throughout the day. Just keep in mind that the mattress is meant to be smaller than the interior of the tent. Simply push the mattress all the way down to the other end of the ladder so that the empty space can stow your bags, shoes, or whatever. There is a bit of prep and setup you need to do before mounting it to your vehicles load bars. EVERYTHING* is included!!!Take the tent out of the box has got to be the hardest thing in this setup. If you have room indoors with carpet, it’s easy. I was working outside where I didn’t want to slide and ruin my new tent on the the concrete patio floor. So I got creative and ripped the cardboard box apart at the nailed down seam. Don’t use a blade! It will cut through and damage your tent, so I used my bare (bear-like) hands to rip it apart. Once open, you’ll find all the parts. I placed the tent on a wooden table covered with a blanket. Just follow the well documented instructions included in the packaging. The 2 modifications I did in my application was to add holes to secure the ladder in the closed position and to have longer mounting plates for my load bars. The ladder in the closed position simply allows the ladder to slide out easy, maybe too easy. So I simply marked the holes in the closed position and drilled holes. Now whenever it’s closed, it’s locked.I have a Land Rover LR4 and the load bars are super wide, about 3 inches wide. The included mounting plates can only accommodate about 2 – 2.5 inches. So I went to Home Depot to get a 1/4” steel plate by 2 feet long. I measured, cut out 4 pieces, drilled holes, and spray painted them with rust-oleum rust resistant paint. The bolts included are fairly long and works perfectly.I also bought the annex, tent shower skirt, or whatever you want to call it. It attaches the aluminum extrude without any issues.

Cover is awful
I’m pretty fond of the tent, but the cover is a real pain. The way this is designed there are just so many things that want to catch in the zipper. After a few times, the zipper will stop closing and will ultimately break. The original cover broke within 14 nights use, and here I am with the new cover I bought and it’s stuck again. This tent is really a pain to pack up, especially in the elements. Cover is a bit too small, so you run into problems. None of my friends who have rtts run into this issue. Soon to sell this or just trash it vs paying several hundred dollars a year just to keep it covered.

Owen’s review is completely false. I’m overlanding around America currently and Front Runner(FR) is just a phone call away. Steve and Bryan at FR have answered all my questions and figured out how to get a huge order forwarded to meet me at my next stop. Just give them a call!

Tolles Zelt, leicht aufzubauen, das zusammenbauen etwas schwierig. Wind und Regen standgehalten. Empfehle aber ein Keil für die Leiter, bei unebenen Boden. Matratze erinnert an schulsport, etwas hart. Aber so I’m ganzen sehr zufrieden.
